The BBC’s speech-edit scandal and the lessons for us

  As a former BBC journalist, it is excruciating to watch heads roll over a lapse in editorial standards at one of the great British institutions that thrived for 103 years. What is even more shocking is that the BBC’s persistent bias towards Israel during the Gaza war—including its repeated suppression of genocide allegations—never triggered resignations. Yet a single edited speech by a U.S. president, unnoticed by him or his supporters for more than a year, has forced out not one but two of the corporation’s most senior executives. A comprehensive review by the Centre for Media Monitoring (CfMM) of the BBC’s coverage of Israel’s war on Gaza found that presenters amplified Israeli perspectives 2,340 times, compared with only 217 Palestinian viewpoints—a stark imbalance. Why the raid at BBC offices in India should worry us all

    The Income Tax (IT) department’s sudden raid at the BBC premises in India has drawn widespread condemnation against the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It has shocked journalists, activists and opposition politicians alike. Such a high-handed action against one of the oldest and most trusted global broadcasting networks, understandably, will be a cause of concern and discomfort in Western capitals, as well as those in every democratic country.  The raid, which the IT officials have described as a “survey” follows recent controversy over the BBC’s showing of a two-part investigative documentary, ‘’India: The Modi Question’’, which for the first time revealed a confidential investigation by the British government into the 2002 Gujarat riots that left more than a thousand Muslims dead. The British investigation report concluded that the violence had “all the hallmarks of genocide” and found Modi “directly responsible” for not stopping the killings of Muslims....
