Following a social media storm, the Bangla Academy has now explained its decision as to why it barred the publishing house Adarsha from taking part in this year’s Ekushey book fair, the most desired annual book exposition by publishers and readers. The clarification issued by the academy, however, raises more questions than explaining the rationale behind its decision. The worst part in the academy’s attempt to clear the air is the admission in the statement that it had not read the alleged offending book before deciding to exclude its publisher from the exhibition.  The Bangla Academy press release issued on January 21, 2023, and signed by its deputy director Mohammad Akbar Hossain, stated that the academy’s attention had been drawn to news reports published in various media outlets, which claimed that Adarsha ​​was not allotted a stall at the book fair. Sometimes it feels intriguing why some issues kick off fierce debate and why others don’t. One such less discussed, but hugely significant development, was the Hefazat delegation’s recent meeting with prime minister Sheikh Hasina.  Very little has been divulged about the December 17, 2022 parley, other than the Home Minister telling the media that the prime minister will definitely look into the demands made by the Hefazat-e-Islam leaders and fulfil those which are deemed reasonable. Hefazat leaders, too, have said nothing much, except describing the meeting “very fruitful.” The Bangla daily Bhorer Kagoj quoted Maulana Meer Idris saying, ‘The meeting with the prime minister was very fruitful. As we enter 2023, there remains palpable anxiety and nervousness about the national political landscape. It is expected that the 12th parliamentary election will be held at the end of this year or early next year, thereby making everything in politics revolving around the issue of election. In a way, the ruling party Awami League has already kicked off its campaigning, as the prime minister, in her last three public meetings - in Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar and Jashore - sought votes for “the boat” in the next parliamentary elections. Another such meeting is scheduled to be held in Rajshahi in the first week of February.  Steps have been taken to revive the almost dormant 14-party alliance by allocating them two parliamentary seats for upcoming byelections in six constituencies, which fell vacant due to the resignations of BNP  members.  The resignations by those handful of BNP MPs were also a tactic of mounting pressure on the government to agree to the opposition’s demand for reintroduct
