বছর শেষ হতে আর মাত্র দু’দিন। কাগজগুলোতে সালতামামি বেরোলে বাংলাদেশর জন্য করোনা–উত্তর বছরটা কেমন গেল, তার একটা মোটামুটি স্মৃতিচারণ পাওয়া যাবে। তবে আমার যতটা মনে পড়ছে, তাতে পুরো বছরের মধ্যে রাজনীতির জন্য সবচেয়ে আলোচিত মাস নিশ্চিতভাবেই ডিসেম্বর। এ মাসেই দুটো বড় দলের কাছ থেকে আগামীর বাংলাদেশ নিয়ে তাদের পরিকল্পনার কথা জানা গেল। একইসঙ্গে কার কী সাংগঠনিক অবস্থা এবং রাজনৈতিক মেরুকরণ কেমন হতে যাচ্ছে, তারও একটা চেহারা মোটামুটি পাওয়া যাচ্ছে। প্রথমে আমরা পেলাম বিরোধীদল বিএনপির রাষ্ট্র মেরামত কর্মসূচি এবং যুগপৎ আন্দোলনের ঘোষণা। আর, ২৪ ডিসেম্বর পেলাম আওয়ামী লীগের রাজনৈতিক ঘোষণাপত্র – ’স্মার্ট বাংলাদেশ’ গড়ে তোলার প্রত্যয়। দুটো বিষয় নিয়ে বিশদ বিশ্লেষণ প্রয়োজন, কিন্তু সংবাদপত্রের সীমিত পরিসরে তা সম্ভব নয়। তবে প্রধান প্রধান উপাদানগুলোর ওপর সংক্ষেপে হলেও কিছুটা আলোকপাত করা যায়।  ২.  যাঁরা টিভিতে সরাসরি সম্প্রচার দেখেননি, তাঁদের পক্ষে আওয়ামী লীগের সম্মেলনের ঘোষণাপত্রে কী ছিল, তা নজরে নাও পড়তে পারে। কেননা, সংবাদমাধ্যম  কয়েকদিন ধরে রাজনীতির চেয়ে নেতৃত্ব নিয়ে জল্পনাতেই মেতে ছিল। গত ১৩ বছরে সরকারের এবং দলের

It is well known that parole is granted only on the ground of compassion to anyone under custody, irrespective of conviction or even if they are under trial. But Ali Azam’s case has proven that such a compassionate act can also become an egregiously uncompassionate behaviour.  Though this excruciating image has drawn widespread condemnation within the country, the government seems to be unmoved. Neither any action has been taken against those involved in such inhumane treatment to a detainee, nor any investigation has been ordered, despite a rare intervention by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in this regard. আগামীকাল স্বাধীন বাংলাদেশের বিজয় অর্জনের ৫২তম দিবস। স্বাধীন রাষ্ট্র হিসাবে বাংলাদেশের ৫১ বছরের অভিযাত্রায় আমাদের শাসনব্যবস্থা ও রাষ্ট্র পরিচালনা নিয়ে যত ধরনের পরীক্ষা–নিরীক্ষা হয়েছে, তার তুলনা বিশ্বের আর কোনো দেশের আছে কি না, বলা মুশকিল। এর মধ্যে অবশ্য দুই দফার সামরিক শাসনও কিছু রাজনৈতিক সমস্যার জন্ম দিয়েছে, যার প্রভাব থেকে এখনো নিষ্কৃতি মেলেনি। একটি বহুদলীয় সংসদীয় গণতন্ত্রের আকাঙ্খা থেকে আমাদের যাত্রা শুরু হলেও আমরা রাষ্ট্রপতিশাসিত একদলীয় এবং বহুদলীয় উভয় রকম ব্যবস্থাই দেখেছি। আবার সংসদীয় ব্যবস্থায় উত্তরণের পর আমরা যেমন বহুদলীয় সংসদ পেয়েছি, তেমনই একইসঙ্গে মন্ত্রীসভা ও বিরোধী দলের আসন অলংকৃত করা অদ্ভুতুড়ে ব্যবস্থাও দেখেছি।  এখন সংসদের বিরোধীদলের আসন থেকে বিএনপির সংসদ সদস্যদের পদত্যাগের পর আমরা দেখবো আরেক ধরনের সংসদ, যে সংসদে বিরোধীদলের আসনে বসা কেউ আর মন্ত্রীসভায় নেই, কিন্তু আসন ভাগাভাগি করে নির্বাচিত হওয়ায় তাঁদের কার্যকর বিরোধী দল গণ্য করাও কঠিন। তাঁরা সরকারি ঘোষণায় বিরোধী দল, কিন্তু বাস্তবে সরকারের সহযোগী। অন্য সব কিছু বাদ দিলেও শুধু এরকম অনন্য নজির তৈরির জন্যই আমরা নিজেদের বিশ্বের রো

  Now that the dust has settled in Dhaka following the peaceful and orderly staging of the BNP’s mass rally we need to find some answers to a few simple questions.   32 years have gone by since our national leaders made a pledge to make Bangladesh a democracy where the fundamental rights of the people would be protected, and the judiciary’s independence and neutrality and rule of law would be guaranteed. Laws contrary to fundamental rights would be scrapped.   বিশ্বের নানাপ্রান্তের নানা ঘটনায় এমন অদ্ভুত মিল পাওয়া যায় যে বিস্মিত না হয়ে উপায় থাকে না। মাত্র গেল সোমবার যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ইংরেজি অভিধান ’মেরিয়াম ওয়েবস্টার’ জানিয়েছে যে চলতি বছরের সবচেয়ে বেশি যে শব্দটির অর্থ তাদের অনলাইনে খোঁজা হয়েছে, সেটা হচ্ছে গ্যাসলাইটিং। তাদের বিচারে তাই গ্যাসলাইটিং হচ্ছে ২০২২ সালের ওয়ার্ড অব দ্য ইয়ার বা বর্ষসেরা শব্দ। বছরজুড়ে অনলাইনে শব্দটির অর্থ খোঁজা বেড়েছে ১৭৪০ শতাংশ। তো শব্দটির মানে কী? ইংরেজি থেকে বাংলা করলে যেটা দাঁড়ায় তা হচ্ছে, নিজের সুবিধার জন্য কাউকে চরমভাবে বিভ্রান্ত করার চর্চা বা অনুশীলন। অন্যকে নিয়ন্ত্রণ বা তার কাছ থেকে  নিজের জন্য সুবিধা আদায়ে কারসাজি করা, চরম বিভ্রান্তিকর তথ্য দেওয়া বা সরাসরি প্রতারণা বোঝাতে শব্দটি ব্যবহৃত হয়ে থাকে। মেরিয়াম ওয়েবস্টার এর সংজ্ঞায়ন করতে গিয়ে বলেছে, এটা হচ্ছে একজনকে দীর্ঘসময় ধরে মানসিকভাবে বিভ্রান্ত করা। ভুক্তভোগী ব্যাক্তিকে তার নিজস্ব চিন্তাভাবনা, বাস্তবতার উপলব্ধি কিম্বা স্মৃতির যথার্থতা নিয়ে প্রশ্ন তুলে বিভ্রান্ত করা অথবা  তার আত্মবিশ্বাসে চিড় ধরানো এবং আত্মমর্যাদার ক্ষতিসাধন করে একজনের মানসিক স্থিতিশীলতা নষ্ট করে অ

Our foreign ministry, reportedly, has informed a parliamentary standing body that Bangladeshi expatriates involved in “anti-government activities” abroad will be brought under law. One report published in this newspaper on October 28, titled ‘ Expats involved in anti-govt activities to face music’ noted that the report submitted by the ministry officials in said, “Sadly, besides playing a positive role in protecting the interests of Bangladesh and sending remittances, many of the expats are engaged in propaganda against Bangladesh and the government. The government is working to bring those who are engaged in anti-government activities and giving provocative and completely fabricated statements to book.”  Apparently, it may sound like a patriotic duty of the government to counter anti-Bangladesh propaganda. However, the word “anti-government” in the statement clearly implies that it has nothing to do with patriotism, but to silence critics of the government. And the efforts or actions
