On 7 January, Bangladesh’s prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, is set to claim re-election in what some observers have called “staged polling”, the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has termed a “dummy election” and   The Economist  has described as a “farce”. Desperate to avoid a genuine democratic exercise, Hasina’s government has preemptively removed its only real challenger from the field. More than twenty thousand BNP activists are behind bars, as are key BNP leaders, and the opposition party has decided to boycott the election rather than contest an unfair vote. The farce is best explained with the facts. For the 300 directly elected seats in Bangladesh’s parliament, the ruling Awami League has official nominees in 263 constituencies. In addition, it also has 269 party members standing as “independent” candidates, meaning there are two or sometimes even more Awami League candidates in many places – and that’s not counting the candidates of other parties allied to the Awami

Bangladesh has had two elections since the system of a non-partisan caretaker government overseeing elections was abolished. One was boycotted by most of the parties except the allies of the ruling Awami League, and the other was participated in by all the registered and unregistered parties. In reality, neither could be termed participatory, as voters were practically disenfranchised on both occasions. As we approach the third consecutive election to be held under the AL administration—which has so far been a restaging of 2014, due to the boycott by opposition parties—one question that worries everyone is: how will the world react? শুরুতেই চলতি সপ্তাহের দুটো খবরের দিকে পাঠকের দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণ করতে চাই। প্রথমটি  বাংলাদেশের সরকারি বার্তা সংস্থা, বাসসের  ১৭ ডিসেম্বরের একটি প্রতিবেদন। এতে তারা জানিয়েছে, ভারতের সাবেক পররাষ্ট্র প্রতিমন্ত্রী এম জে আকবর বলেছেন, ’প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা বাংলাদেশের দ্বিতীয় মুক্তিযুদ্ধে বিজয়ী। কারণ, তিনি স্বৈরাচার থেকে  দেশকে মুক্ত করেছেন।’ ঢাকায় ফরেন সার্ভিস একাডেমিতে ‘৫২ বছরে বাংলাদেশের অর্জন এবং আগামী দশকগুলোতে এই অঞ্চলে এবং এর বাইরে দেশটির অবস্থান’ শীর্ষক একটি আলোচনায় তিনি ছিলেন মূল বক্তা। তিনি আসন্ন নির্বাচন প্রসঙ্গে বলেন, ’বাংলাদেশে গণতান্ত্রিক প্রক্রিয়া অব্যাহত থাকায় তিনি এখানে দারুণ আনন্দ দেখতে পাচ্ছেন।’   দ্বিতীয় খবরটিও ভারতের আরেকজন সাবেক কূটনীতিকের বক্তব্যসম্পর্কিত, যা তিনি ১৮ ডিসেম্বর ঢাকাতেই একটি দৈনিকের আয়োজিত অনুষ্ঠানে বলেছেন। বাংলাদেশে ভারতের সাবেক হাইকমিশনার পঙ্কজ সরণ বলেছেন, ‘বাংলাদেশের নির্বাচন প্রক্রিয়ায় কে নির্বাচিত হবেন, সে বিষয়ে দেশের জনগণই সিদ্ধান্ত নেবে।’ তিনি আরো বলেন, ‘বাংলাদেশের জনগণের জন্য সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ এটা বোঝা যে নির্বাচনে আসতে হবে।’ তিনি বলেন, ‘ভারত গণতন্

  Exactly six months ago, BNP’s secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, who is now in prison charged with subversive acts in nearly a dozen new cases,  expressed his apprehension that the government wanted to keep BNP out of the election. Police reportedly filed these new cases after the violent ending of BNP’s grand rally on October 28. He already had about 84 cases pending, stemming from his party’s campaign for reintroduction of election time caretaker government since 2013, after the ruling party Awami League unilaterally abolished it, relying on its super majority in parliament and a controversial court verdict.  On July 15, Fakhrul told journalists that by randomly implicating BNP leaders and activists in false cases, reviving cold cases, and fast tracking trials the government wanted to ensure it would keep BNP out of the election race. It’s ironic that the 75th anniversary of two international instruments - the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and the UN Convention on Genocide - is being observed when the world is witnessing the killing spree on and forced displacement of Palestinians in Gaza via Israel’s military operation.
